The Pentagon has been trying for years to dump its kinetic-energy anti-satellite weapons program (which is under the US Army as that branch is responsible for "air defense") but has been stopped every time by powerful New Hampshire Senator Bob Smith. But Smith lost his primary election battle to John E Sununu, perhaps spelling the end of this program.--Stephen V Cole
