Germany Revives The Iron Cross Medal

July 9, 2009:  The German army has awarded the first Iron Cross medals, for bravery in a combat zone, since 1945. From 1813 to 1945, nearly five million Iron Cross medals were awarded to German military personnel (and a few civilians who were performing military functions.) The Iron Cross medal ceased to exist between 1945 and last year. But popular demand caused the German government to create an "Honor Cross for Bravery" which is, to all appearances, a continuation of the Iron Cross medals that have been awarded for over two centuries. The first recipients are four army sergeants, who performed heroically during a Taliban attack in Afghanistan.

After World War II, the government designed an Iron Cross for World War II veterans to wear, one that did not include a swastika (which has been illegal to display in Germany since World War II.) Until 1918, there were several higher (than the Iron Cross) order decorations for distinguished service in combat, but these were replaced during World War II by more elaborate versions of the Iron Cross. At the moment, all the German armed forces have is Honor Cross for Bravery. But, as in World War I, where the first Iron Cross you got was the Iron Cross 2nd class, and if you got another one, it was the Iron Cross 1st class, the Honor Cross may also morph a bit.

Wow, wow, wow ...   Some correction is necessary here ...

Lets start with a display of various German Army medals ...

lowest grade service medal is the "Ehrenmedallie der Bundeswehr",  requirements are at least 7 month of service,  "extraordinary performance and brave service"

The Bundeswehr "Cross of Honor" comes in 3 stages, the first one (bronze) beeing available after 5 years of service.  Cross of Honor is not awarded for bravery but for performance and loyal service.
The second stage (Silver - 10 years of service) and Gold (20 years of service) come with a Red lining.

 Uniform Bands

The new thing is the "Bundeswehr Cross of Honor for Bravery"

This does only come in 1 stage yet,  and is available without any service time restriction - awarded for "special accomplishments in combat and bravely defending the freedom and unity of the German People under personal risk of live".

sjdoc    Any medals struck for other distinctions?   7/9/2009 7:21:37 AM
Has the German Army equivalent decorations for wounds or other injuries sustained in contact with the enemy (like the U.S. military's Purple Heart), for participation in combat operations (like the U.S. Army's CIB and CAB), or for "above and beyond the call of duty" heroism equivalent to those actions for which the Victoria Cross or the Medal of Honor are awarded?

1.  There is no special wounded decoration yet, in my opinion its the next logical step ...

2.  The newly introduced Bundeswehr Cross of Honor for bravery is the equivalent to the "above and beyond the call of duty" -  and the one that was really necessary and missing until now.
