What Was Going On With The Media

October 26, 2009: As with Iraq, the troops in Afghanistan (no matter what country they are from) know, from their own experience, that their service there matters. Many of their countrymen back home do not, and the media does little to change this opinion. The main reason given by the media is that the soldiers just don't understand what they are experiencing, and fail to see the "big picture."

For the troops, the violence and terror that the Taliban use is real. The fear of the local victims is also quite vivid. The troops know that their efforts against the Taliban and drug gangs is appreciated. The troops see cause and effect, but this rarely gets reported. The media wants bad news, not reality. Some journalists begin to see things the way the soldiers they are with do. But their editors usually intercede, and order the reporter to shape up and get with the company line, or find another job. Some independent journalists report troops experiences accurately, but are dismissed as biased and out-of-touch.

In Iraq, the troops turned out to have a more accurate, and prescient, view of what was going on than most journalists. Naturally, few reporters reflected on this after things settled down. Some historians probably will, eventually, and wonder what was going on with the media.

I know I would be far more interested in reading the good news than bad. Maybe some large media houses figure this out one day and see the opportunity to make a buck. When markets get saturated with bad news, it's time to shift focus and start selling news of hope.

I'm fed up with this over-critical media reporting regarding modern conflicts against terrorist safe havens.  Not to say I'd need any propaganda, but how about just objective reporting with the entire SWOT spectrum covered...

Hey media bosses: You'll get my euros right from the moment you also start telling about the good aspects of ongoing  conficts. I'm not blood-thirsty, what I'm deprived of is news of progress.

The truth is available, just not from the older types of prime sources.  In the US, you need to tune in to Fox News.  I feel sorry for the Europeans, I am afraid you may never hear any news that is objective.  Fox is not perfect but they do a much better job that the mainstream media.
It is hard to know where the truth really lies today.  It seems all sources have their bias.

If you don't believe there's a difference btw CNN and FOX just try bouncing back and forth btw the 2 when they're covering the same topic.

Make life simpler for everybody:  Legislate a new set of media laws that forbids most media coverage of wars.  Apart from those whose jobs are tied to military procurement, as well as military families, the rest of the population does not care a whole lot about what soldiers do overseas.  Why overload them with superfluous information?

They was making money by pandering to an audience.

Fox does this too, they just pander to a different audience.

IMHO all the news media leftwing or rightwing are questionable.

The main stream news media is far left in their perspective, but always try to claim they are centrist.

FOX is center-right and makes jokes about it.  I am not sure that they are any less biased, but the honesty is refreshing.  Besides, I like people who can laugh at themselves.
