Just Don't Say It In English

July 15, 2009: American and European efforts to get peace negotiations going between the Palestinians and Israel, seem to be ignoring what Palestinian officials say in Arab language media. TV interviews are the most compelling examples of this. When Fatah officials are asked about these negotiations, some of them are quite frank. Just as maps of the area, used in schools and the media, show no Israel, only Palestine, the officials explain that the peace negotiations are just a means towards an end. For Fatah, as well as the more outspoken (in English) Hamas, the ultimate goal is the destruction of Israel. Any peace deal is considered as a pause, so that the Arabs can build up their strength for the final battle.

In the West, more people, especially in Europe, are agreeing with the Palestinians. Officially, though, Western leaders believe that a peace deal will eventually change the minds of Palestinians.

In Professor Dumbledore's words, the West is optimistic to the point of foolishness.  That sort of blindness affects every aspect of Western policy, believing that time is on its side and that we have a mere failure to persuade which will end in time when wiser heads, who truly understand that Islam is truly a religion of peace and tolerance prevail.

They (Arabs) are waiting for final battle almost 70 years. In the meantime, they have lost two most significant fighters (Egypt and Jordan). But, as long as there is no solution in sight Palestinians are receiving a lot of international aid. So, the goal might not be to win, but to keep playing. English version might  be for western donors, and Arab version for neighbors. Everyone keeps hearing  what they expect to,  and the money is flowing in the "right" direction.

My takes so far ...

1.  The Western folks:  Perhaps the most decadent, false-optimistic, and high-moral-head-in-the-ass bunch of people since the days of Roman Decadence.  While many of them like to think of themselves as the best educated, most tolerant, and most diverse, they really do not know 'the other side'.

2.  The Arab folks:  Apart from a handful of wealthy Gulf State bunch, their persistent self-delusion and self-destructiveness will become pretty darn messy, if the entire region goes aflame.  Because their beliefs have all but became synonymous with dysfunction, they will take as many infidels with them as possible to the la la land of Allah.

3.  Conclusion:  Both cultures approach each other with a plenty of delusion and it only takes an extra round of more delusion going south to get everyone into a bloody f*ck*n' mess.
