Shell Proof Tents

November 15, 2006: Noting that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan often get hit with rockets or mortar fire when they are out in the bush, and using tents, the army has come up with lightweight armor panels that can quickly be affixed to the inside of tents (with straps), and provide protection from shell fragments. The wood panels have an outer coating of "E-glass" (a strong material that will stop shell fragments), and a wooden core to provide bulk and form. Called MPBS (Modular Ballistic Protection System), a shipment is headed for Iraq, for distribution to the troops. Tests have already shown that the stuff stops shell fragments, but you never know what else can happen to the stuff in a combat zone. The MPBS are cheaper, lighter and offers more protection that the previous alternative, Kevlar curtains.
