The International Campaign to Ban Landmines reports that 17 million mines have been destroyed but another 250 million are stored in the arsenals of 105 nations. (Of these, 225 million are in the stocks of non-signatory nations, including the US, Russia, and China.) Seventeen nations have given up all of their anti-personnel land mines, and another 27 are gearing up to do so. --Stephen V Cole
