Poland Becomes Ground Zero

NUCLEAR, BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WEAPONS

August 18, 2008:  Poland has finally agreed to allow the placement of U.S. anti-missiles systems on their territory. This will consist of ten silos for the GBI (Ground Based Interceptors). This is a 12.7 ton ballistic missile that delivers a 140 pound "kill vehicle" that will intercept a ballistic missile before it begins its descent into the atmosphere. The GBI kill vehicle attempts to destroy the incoming missile, while avoiding decoys.

The U.S. already has 21 GBIs deployed in Alaska and three in California. The GBI can receive target information from a variety of source, mainly a large X-band radar and space based sensors (that can detect ballistic missiles during their initial launch.) The Czech Republic has agreed to allow an X-band radar to be set up on its territory. The U.S. plans to install 5-10 GBIs a year over the next few years. Each GBI costs over $100 million (up to several hundred million dollars, depending on how many are built and how you allocated development costs.) The GBI can intercept ballistic missiles launched from as far away as 5,000 kilometers. .

aki009    Why the russians care so much   8/18/2008 9:58:19 AM
It seems to me that the reasons the russians care so much for these systems is that they must have quite a number of plans that assume an aggressive first strike against troop concentrations. Reducing the efficiency of that first strike with a ballistic missile defence means that they have to reserve a larger number of missiles for the task, which in turn might mean they don't have enough under the current arms reduction treaties.

The things keeping the russians from going into another missile building binge are probably the poor readiness of what they already have, and memories of how the last arms race with the west ended. I'd expect them to raise the readiness and efficiency of their current systems, and obviously claim this that and the other. Perhaps even turn off the gas valves a few times, but in the end the russians need the western revenue more than the west needs russian energy.

Russian general says Poland a nuclear 'target'

By Damien McElroy
London Telegraph
Last Updated: 4:16PM BST 15 Aug 2008

As Condoleezza Rice arrived in Georgia to finalise a peace deal and secure the withdrawal of Russian troops from the former Soviet state, Moscow issued the direct threat to another US ally.

?Poland is making itself a target. This is 100 percent? certain, Russia?s Interfax news agency quoted General Anatoly Nogovitsyn as saying.

?It becomes a target for attack. Such targets are destroyed as a first priority,? Gen Nogovitsy was quoted as saying.

He added that Russia?s military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons ?against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them,? Interfax said.

George W Bush, speaking in Washington accused Russian President Dmitry Medvedev of "bullying" his neighbours and said the tactics were working against Russia's interests on the international stage.

[My Comment: Now we have proof of Russian intentions. This proves that Russia intents to attack Poland. Putin is "Old School." He believes that Russia should control the world and intents to do so. Thus, any time anyone takes measures to defend themselves, Putin thinks that is aggression. It is too bad that the Americans and Europeans do not understand this. The West still thinks the Russians have no aggresive intents. So unfortunately, the missile defense system is only intented to protect Europe from Iran. So, ironically the Russians are right, the Poles should be using their missile defenses to defend themselves against an Russian attack because Russians DO intent to attack Poland.]

While these missiles only tamper with the nuclear balance with Russia in quite an insignificant way in practice (being only 6 missiles), their placement in the face of Russian rhetoric is a tiny step towards justifying (in Russias eyes) the Russian invasion of Poland which people are starting to speculate about.

Adding this kind of defence will not keep the Russians out, it rather makes them more likely to go in.  Their justifying the sites as nuclear targets is but the first step.

There's no Russian paranoia here. Their hysteria is mostly for internal consumption - with a bit of international bullying thrown in.

Pure speculation here, but just wondering, could they be getting so upset becuase they have let their nukes deteriorate to a similar extent they let their conventional forces, and actually don't have as many usable warheads as they want us to believe?

I don't think so - the Russian missile tests of recent have been pretty much a success - the SS-18 Satan tests have been good.

I have my doubts about a Russian invasion of Poland because Poland (unlike Georgia) is part of NATO.  An attack will bring in the full force of NATO.  Unlike Georgia - Poland is accessable to western forces - both by sea and by land frontier.  There is also the trip-wire effect - of US troops maning US facilities inside Poland.  I doubt Putin would risk an all out war with NATO and the US over Poland - missiles or no missiles.

1.) Iran sure scared those Poles into submission.
2.) The hold-up had been because Poland wanted America to upgrade their anti-air defences, in return for the priviledge of hosting the BMD in their country. Before S.O., America refused, so the talks stalled. In the days following S.O. America finally decided to go ahead and give Poland the Patriot missiles. Thus the deal was de facto finalised. It's a case of very clever use of media hysteria by the Poles to get what they wanted from the Americans. They would get their air defences, and America could broadcast to the entire world that the BMD deal was signed because of "Russian aggression" in Georgia, and the corresponding need to "protect an ally" against said Russian aggression, which would have gone nicely through Congress.

I used to dislike the Polish leadership as being led by an oppressive idiot, but I have a lot of respect for them now, playing the world media in such a clever way. The Russian leadership still has a lot to learn.
