India Moves Towards An Unmanned Tank

August 19, 2009: India is developing an unmanned tank. The first test vehicle, a BMP 2 equipped with sensors and remote control equipment, successfully completed tests recently. A remote operator was able to drive the BMP 2 around typical battlefield obstacles. The vehicle has been turned over to the army for further testing and feedback to the developers.

The U.S. has also experimented with remotely controlled vehicles, including one system that would equip regular armored vehicles with the sensors and remote control equipment. Thus a manned vehicle could be used remotely in particularly dangerous situations. But the U.S. Army has now shifted to developing smaller scouting vehicles that can operate completely on their own, just transmitting video back to the users nearby.

India has been working on it's Arjun tank for 35 years and reportedly it's going to compete against the T-90s in trials this year after India has repeatedly had to order T-90s because of delays in Arjun.  India expects to have 1,500+ T-90s in about ten years.  So after not being able to design a MBT in 35 years I find it ridiculous to read a headline titled "India Moves Towards An Unmanned Tank".  Leaving aside the small matter of citing a remotely driven BMP and not in fact a tank or mention of such a program.  It's as if a baby teething is leading towards a rabid meat eating monster.  This of course further leaves aside the small matter of whether remotely operated really means the same today as unmanned which in fact it does not.  Most unmanned military vehicles today require some level of operator input but they are not all entirely remotely operated.  So I'd further note the misleading nature of this entire article.

The Indians are really pushing the envelope of military technology these days.  First they launch a nuclear-powered submarine that doesn't have a nuclear reactor, now they're developing a remote-controlled tank that isn't a tank at all.  Progress!
