The Argentine air force is desperately in need of modernization; it's only combat aircraft purchases in twenty years were 36 used A-4 Skyhawks. Argentina has asked the US to provide used F-16As discarded by National Guard units but has gotten no answer and doesn't have the money to buy them anyway. Argentina has ordered a dozen AT-63 Pampa light attack trainers and will convert ten of its old Pampa trainers to the armed light attack version. One bright spot is in electronic intelligence, with at least one Boeing-707 refitted by Israel for intelligence gathering and signal monitoring duties. --Stephen V Cole
