Vympel (the Russian air-to-air missile maker) is testing a new version of the R77 (AA-12 Adder). The new version replaces the original solid fuel rocket engine with a combined rocket-ramjet; this increases the range from the original 90km to the new and astounding distance of 200km. Launch weight has increased from 175kg to a heavier 226kg. The new version is 3.7m long, 200mm in diameter, and has a wing span of 820mm, virtually the same as the original, allowing it to be carried on existing launch rails without modification. --Stephen V Cole
