Australia has become the first foreign country to win approval to buy the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM). This weapon is expected to enter low rate initial production about 2002.--Stephen V Cole
Boeing has completed the 12th and last of the F-18E/F Super Hornets in the first Low Rate Initial Production lot. The aircraft are conducting their first operational evaluation phase at China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center. --Stephen V Cole
Raytheon has won a critical contract to provide the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars for the F-18E/F Super Hornet fighters. This defeats a rival bid by Northrop Grumman. Raytheon has provided all of the previous Hornet radars. The AESA radars will provide Super Hornet pilots with longer range and greater accuracy in tracking aerial targets, and will have a significantly better capability to do ground mapping. The AESA radars will not be available in 2006, meaning that the first half of the Super Hornet production run will have the older APG-73 radars, but these planes could be retrofitted with AESAs at a later time. --Stephen V Cole
