The US has warned The United Arab Emirates that it will reject any attempt to mount the Black Shahine long-range cruise missile on the F-16C60 fighters which the US expects to sell the UAE. The UAE has been considering the Anglo-French missile because the US will not sell it equivalent US missiles for heavy air-to-surface strike missions. The terms of the US sale of the fighters includes US control over what weapons the UAE mounts on them. The UAE is upset over the limits and is stalling on signing the final deal. --Stephen V Cole
Impressed by the use of precision-guided weapons in the Kosovo War, Canada has announced plans to buy US-made GBU-10 and GBU-12 precision-guided bombs. It is also considering the GBU-16.--Stephen V Cole
Australia is reviewing options to replace its F-111 and F-18 fighters, and Defense Minister John Moore has called for something other than a "simple replacement mentality". Moore wants to consider other options to replace the strike capability of the existing aircraft, perhaps with cruise missiles or remotely piloted vehicles.--Stephen V Cole
