The United States Army: A Chronology, 1775 to the Present, by John C. Fredriksen

Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO, 2010. Pp. viii, 375. Illus., biblio., index. $85.00. ISBN: 9781598843446.

A comprehensive, often day-by-day, guide to the history of the U.S. Army from its beginnings.

Well qualified to produce such a work, Fredriksen is the author of quite a number of works in military history, most recently The United States Army in the War of 1812 (2009) and Civil War Almanac (2008).  He uses numerous short entries to give us a look at the evolution of the Army from the eve of the Revolutionary War through 2008.  Battles, campaigns, and other military events are noted, and also critical political, policy, and even technological developments.  Fredriksen supplements these entries with a great many side-bars that fill in more general detail, with
profiles of notable persons, major operations, notable military units, and more, making the book more than just a simple list of events, but reference guide to the Army's history.

A useful handbook for anyone seriously interested in the history of the army.
