Turkey has suggested that China pay to have the ex-Soviet carrier Varyag modified so that it can pass safely through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits. The Chinese see no reason to spend money on the ship, which they now insist will be cut up for scrap.--Stephen V Cole
