Artillery: March 23, 2000

Archives

Turkey has completed the first test phase of its new TOROS artillery rockets. The 230mm weapon has a minimum range of 10km and a maximum range of 65km, while the 260mm weapon has a minimum range of 15km and a maximum range of 100km. Having proven that the rockets work, the Turks will now proceed to develop the warhead and guidance units. The first warheads will be blast/fragmentation types. The 230mm weapon will have a 120kg warhead with 25,000 steel balls; the 260mm weapon will have a 145kg warhead with 30,000 steel balls. Other warhead types will follow. These will be mounted on a truck carrying either six 230mm rockets or four 260mm types.-Stephen V Cole
