Italy and Turkey are jointly producing the next version of the Italian S-211 twin jet trainer. The small (27.5 foot wingspan), three ton jet carries two pilots, side by side. The aircraft can also carry 1,400 pounds of weapons. The new version, the M-311, will have better electronics, a more powerful engine and better maneuverability. The aircraft has been in production for 21 years, and is used by Italy, the Philippines and Singapore. The M-311 is being offered to Britain, Turkey and Singapore. The M-311 will also be more capable as a combat aircraft, and even easier to maintain. This will also make it attractive to less wealthy nations that cannot afford to maintain more complex aircraft.
